Ambiguity #2 / Fictional Symposium

Fictional Symposium / Cyborg Girl Identification / The Chance Event II

/ An evening of discussions and presentations, to create an ‘alternative fictional symposium’ for artworks and their ‘avatar creators’. Presentations will be given in person, while the speakers will also be present on a gaming platform projected in The Showroom’s studio space.

The virtual part of this event will be set in a digital desert environment that references The Chance Event that took place in the Nevada desert in the late 1990s, organised by writer/filmmaker Chris Kraus. Numerous philosophers, artists and musicians came together there to investigate the mystery of chance.

/ Speakers for the event at The Showroom have been invited to create fictional avatars (in the form of 3D files) that will be imported into this new digital desert. Avatars will be based on identifying with the ‘cyborg girl’, drawing from the feminist perspective of Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto (first published 1983) and ideas from the French collective Tiqquin’s Theory of The Young Girl (first published 1999). All avatar information will be fed into the desert environment, creating a new form of event that is both symposium and role-playing game/ chance encounter.

/ Over the course of the evening at The Showroom, each of the avatars (speakers) will discuss one piece of artwork they would like to ‘save’ within the symposium’s digital environment. The file will end up looking like a video game set in the desert where documented conversations from the event will remain as an archive, storing both the avatars and their select artworks.

Ambiguity Symposim _ Slade

2 DAY SYMPOSIUM:
a fun exploration of ambiguity: what's the meaning of it all?

Ambiguity itself as a concept could be perceived as the infinite step of creation before things are named or taxonomized, the liminal step before any subculture or zeitgeist becomes discovered by institutions. This symposium attempts to provide the audience and participants with this precious time window, without claiming any axiomatic foundation or titled result. Therefore our intention for discourse is that within these few days whatever happens must remain in a process of becoming, our aim is to highlight the futility of conclusive results/ statements concerning art creation, art politics or other matters, featuring the necessity of questioning within creating discourse. We aim towards the deconstruction of any sort of teleology, fetishising uncertainty and messed up situations of being/ breathing creating.
